Ranking the Classes in Dark Portal

Well, the spoilers are up and all the cards have been opened. I must say that this is a very good set. Heroes of Azeroth really looks more like the foundation set now, because the power level of this set is much higher. I'll have more reviews in my TCGPlayer article this week, but here is how I think the classes rank based solely off of their Dark Portal cards.

1. Warlock. I think the Warlocks got the best cards in this set, and I don't think it was very close. I'm predicting big things from the Undead Warlock specifically in the near future.

Best card:Hellfire

2. Warrior. I wanted to put Rogues here because they were so bad in the first set, but I think the Warriors just got better cards to be honest. Cruelty is incredible due to the lack of the phrase "while attacking." It also combos very well with Killing Spree.

Best card: This one's pretty tough, but I'm going to say Bloodrage.

3. Rogue. The Rogues got some much needed love in this set. They got some more nifty combos and some potentially backbreaking finishers.

Best card: This is another tough choice because they got so many good ones, but I'm going to say Slaughter From the Shadows.

4. Mage. The Mages got a whole bag of new tricks. Aggro Mages got some more burn to add to their arsenal, but the Frost Mages finally got some protection. Ice Block is a big addition for them and it may be time to break those Cold Snaps out of your binder.

Best card:Ice Block

5. Hunter. The majority of the Hunter abilities seem to be geared toward Hunter control although there are some nice new allies that will probably find there way into Hunter rush decks as well. Hunters will now have the bonus of playing multiple archetypes not giving away as much information when the match starts.

Best card: Frost Trap

6. Priest. Some people may disagree with me here, but I think Holy Priests finally have a chance to just negate every attack you make for the entire game and then probably kill you with your own guys. Solo decks in particular (except Rogues) are going to find tough sledding trying to kill off a Holy Priest.

Best card: Brainwash

7. Paladin. I think Paladins got about 3 really good cards and one incredible card, but they didn't get to add much depth and the majority of the equipment in this set seems to be geared toward the smaller classes.

Best card: Lay on Hands.

8. Shaman. A lot of people are going to disagree with this but I just don't see but about 2 cards that are going to replace current cards in Shaman builds. Shock and Soothe is obviously very good, and I think Shaman decks will continue to be a force, but they just didn't get a lot in this set to improve on what they already had.

Best card: Mana Tide Totem is probably the best card, but since it's unlikely to affect many games that haven't already been basically decided, I'm going to say Shock and Soothe here.

9. Druid. Don't get me wrong the Druid got some good cards. There's just a lot of conflict within the Druid abilities. The best Druid deck that doesn't seem like it could be done better by another class is the Cat Form almost solo deck. The problem with this deck of course is that you can't play the Druid's best abilities in Innervate, Wrath, Nature's Majesty, etc. You're going to be able to deal abut a million damage in Cat Form, but you're not going to get to do much else.
I still think that Cat Form Druids will at least be worth giving a shot, I just think that the Druid's best abilities seem to play against each other.

Best Card: Wrath

Best non-Class specific cards.

1. Cannibalize
2. Escape Artist
3. First to Fall
4. Heroic Presence
5. Stoneform

So there's a starting point for the abilities of Through the Dark Portal.

Hey Brian.

For the most part, I agree. I would switch Rogue with Mage, because honestly I still don't think they're viable. Plus... Mages have Counterspell and Instant abilities. Also, the 0-drop gives them the ability to take early advantage no matter the dice roll. Counterspell I believe increased in value from the last set. Abilities will be used much more often, and honestly I don't see heavy ally decks being as viable as they were in HoA.

I, like you, took one look at the Warlock cards and said, "Yep. Warlock."

I'm going to write extensively about the new set in the upcoming weeks (haha I think all of us are).

I don't know about you... but I personally feel that the game has finally begun. While HoA was such an amazing set, it didn't really offer much in terms of the metagame. The strategy and metagaming in my book has finally taken a huge step up.

I was very skeptical about this set, but I'm feeling a bit alright about it. While I don't like to see a lot of control-oriented cards, I'm very intrigued to see where this set is going to take the game. Also how it has an effect on Limited.

How did you do at your release?

@DK,

I think rogues are much better off in this set, more so the mages. Look at shiv.. the sheer amount of awesomeness this card can do. Turn 2 crippling poison is going to put a hurting on those solo warriors. Kick is in my opionion better then counter spell cuz it will never be a dead card. Vanish is amazing.. distract/slaughter is swell too. Lets not forget about Master of Deception.. you know.. the stealth that doesnt get removed after dealing damage.

Yet another good analysis.

I think Frost Trap is way overrated. Everyone is raving about it, but no one has even seen it in action yet! I'm not saying it's not good, but it may not be as good as people make it out as. I think Lightning Reflexes is amazing. Too bad it's a talent-specific card. But if you can stack a few of it you can pretty much ignore many allies on the field. Although I would go with Hootie as the best hunter card. It's not as vulnerable as Bloodclaw and against a rush mirror match it's invaluable.

As for shaman, Mana Tide Totem I agree is the most powerful card, but it's more of a win-more card. I would pick Earth Elemental Totem as the best card in the set. Shock and Soothe is great, but at 4 cost it's expensive, and the 3 heal may not be used to its fullest.

Druid I agree. There's not enough cards to support cat form and bear form didn't get much either. I would imagine Moonkin form with stacked Thorns and 4 damage Wraths to be where the potential lies.

Ditto Kysuke on Frost trap.

We took Frost Nova out of our Mage Main decks a long time ago...

I thought Frost trap would be better because of the alternate cost. But it only stalls a turn of attacking. All the allies stick around a turn and your opponent still gets to develope his board for next turn.

if you're gonna stall you need to stall to a position or combo that is going to win you the game as soon as it hits. More testing is needed to see if a control hunter has that kind of finisher.

There was a nasty combo at my regionals in San Antonio. Guy was doing solo elendril. Rapid Fire with skibis pendant and edgemasters hand guards let him shoot for free. So once he got rapid fire.. he would activate his flip.. and pretty much each resource was 5 dmg. Was pretty cool combo.. he made top8.
